Remaining IPv4 Address Space Drops Below 5%

ter, 19/10/2010 - 09:09

IPv6 adoption at critical phase

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) announced today that less than five percent of the world’s IPv4 addresses remain unallocated. APNIC, the Regional Internet Registry for the Asia Pacific region, has been assigned two blocks of IPv4 addresses by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). The IPv4 free pool dipped below 10% in January, just nine months ago. Since then, over 200 million IPv4 addresses have been allocated from IANA to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). This means that IPv6 adoption is becoming more critical at this moment.

"IPv6 for All" Book Presentation

sex, 30/10/2009 - 10:48
“IPv6 for All” − a use and application guide for different environments − was presented on October 15th

As part of a project led by the ISOC Argentina Chapter (ISOC-AR), on October 15th the book "IPv6 for All" was officially presented. The goal of this project was to publish a training manual for configuring and installing the new IPv6 protocol in different environments, depending on the needs of each user.

Because ISOC-AR had identified that no work of such characteristics existed in our region, “IPv6 for All” was conceived with the idea of contributing to IPv6 deployment and adoption on the part of the entire Internet community, supporting the multiple initiatives that different organizations have been developing in relation to this issue during the course of the years.

The execution of this project was possible thanks to the financial support provided by the Internet Society and the contribution of organizations such as LACNIC and the 6Deploy Project (a project co-funded by the European Commission). We also received the cooperation of experts from Spain, such as Jordi Palet Martínez, Alvaro Vives Martínez and César Olvera Morales (Consulintel); Argentina, Mariela Rocha (Coordinator of the IPv6 Task Force for Latin America and the Caribbean), Guillermo Cicileo (RIU General Coordinator) and Christian O’Flaherty (ISOC Senior Education Manager); and Uruguay, Roque Gagliano (LACNIC). Raúl Echeberría (Chair of ISOC's Board of Trustees and Executive Director of LACNIC), Sebastián Bellagamba (Manager of ISOC's Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean) and Mónica Abalo Laforgia (President of ISOC-AR and Consulting Project Director).

Thanks to the contribution of LACNIC, the book “IPv6 for All” will be translated into English and the PDF version will be available shortly for free download. The Spanish version of the book will be distributed free of charge, and the PDF version of the Spanish text will be available on Friday, November 6 (www.isoc.org.ar). In addition, a second stage of the project anticipates its translation into Portuguese and Catalan.

New F Root Server, now also IPv6 enabled

qua, 05/08/2009 - 12:58

16.07.2009

As mentioned in recent announcements relating to the +Raices Project (http://lacnic.net/en/anuncios/2009_rootserver-sintmaarten.html), the installation of a new F Root Server in our region was completed earlier this month. We refer, specifically, to the Root Server that was installed in St. Maarten, thus becoming the first Root Server in the Caribbean.

Now, just a few days later, the new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6, has been enabled for the services that this Root Server provides to the Community. This not only contributes to improve Internet user access, but also represents a new step towards global IPv6 deploymen.
