During the week from 26 May to 30 May, the LACNIC XI event was held in the city of Salvador, Brazil.
This event provided the framework for the 6th Latin American IPv6 Forum (FLIP6) and the meeting of the IPv6 Task Force for Latin America and the Caribbean, which were held on Thursday 29 and Friday 30, respectively.
The event was honored with the participation of top-level presenters and, as an additional bonus, the “IPv6 Experiment” was carried out for the first time in our region.
Presenters included Iljitsch van Beijnum, the well-known author of a book on BGP (O'Reilly, 2002); Eduardo Ascenco Reis (CTBC Mulltimídia - Br); Alejandro Acosta (Comsat Venezuela); Roque Gagliano (LACNIC Staff), Alain Durand (Comcast), Guillermo Cicileo (Red de Interconexión Universitaria - Ar), and Jordi Palet Martínez (Consulintel - Es).
The meeting concluded with a panel on the actions of national IPv6 Task Forces, which was made up by Jesús Martínez, member of the Cuban IPv6 Task Force; Arturo Díaz Rosemberg, representing the Peruvian IPv6 Task Force; and Nicolás Antoniello, introducing the brand new Uruguayan IPv6 Task Force.
The audience participated intensely in these activities with their comments and questions. The issues that were covered included those having to do with ISPs, the academic environment, governments, etc.
The IPv6 experiment had great acceptance − audience participation levels were high, and the results were beneficial in terms of sharing experiences.
Before closing these meetings, an explicit invitation was made to the community as a whole so that they will continue to participate in these meetings and to accompany the deployment of IPv6 within the region.

The field ‘Total Lengh’which is part of the IPv4 header, is not found in the IPv6 header. Its function was to count the size of the packet payload plus the size of a variable lenght header. As the IPv6 header has a fixed size, the presence of this field is unnecessary.
